All Major NYC Broadcasters Involved in Suits

A number of broadcasting companies have quickly moved to sue Aereo, a startup that aims to stream broadcast HDTV content. The broadcasters are attempting to prevent the service from launching, accusing the startup of copyright infringement and asking judges to order an injunction to block the service before it becomes available to the public.

Aereo's here in New York City!

Hey Guy,

Liked reading your blog. Funny huh - you just wrote about Aereo and their big law suit and now, they've gone ahead and last Wednesday, began to offer Big Apple residents a nice piece of the live HDTV pie... online!

Here's some of what was posted on line. Mmm... pass the popcorn please?

Aereo--the company which recently announced plans to offer a $12-per-month Internet-TV service that will deliver network and local television to Web-enabled devices, and which shortly thereafter became the target of two federal copyright lawsuits brought by various broadcasters and station groups, and which has since launched a countersuit (note: the company, which was founded by interactive TV industry veteran, Chet Kanojia, has secured $20.5 million in a Series-A funding round led by Barry Diller's IAC--for background on the company and the lawsuits it faces, see the articles published on itvt.com, February 15th, March 2nd and March 12th)--on Wednesday announced the availability of its service in the New York market.

"Aereo's technology offers New Yorkers the ability to watch live HDTV online," the company states in its press materials. "New members will receive a 90-day free trial followed by a fee of just $12 a month. Membership includes access to a remote antenna that is used to access over 20 broadcast channels, 40 hours of remote DVR storage and usage on up to five devices. Aereo is launching with compatibility on Web-enabled iOS devices including the iPhone, iPad, Roku, Apple TV and MacBook, with Android support coming soon. Consumers simply register online at http://www.aereo.com. There is no application to download, no box to buy and no equipment to install. It's TV made simple."

Key features of the service, according to the company, include the following: "1) Remote antenna by which a user can choose to access live 24/7 broadcasts of the major networks and local stations. 2) Remote DVR with 40 hours of cloud-based storage enabling a user to record individual shows or set season recordings with the simple touch of a button from any device. 3) Easy-to use programming guide and unique search tool that features touch-screen optimization, enabling a user to search and discover programming by topic, actor or title. 4) Social capabilities allow users to discuss and recommend shows in real time with other Aereo members on Facebook and Twitter."

Said CEO Kanojia: "Technology is changing rapidly and consumers have embraced innovation that simplifies access to entertainment. People no longer want to be tethered to their TV's or cable boxes. Consumers are demanding more flexibility and value; Aereo delivers just that. This truly groundbreaking technology will usher in a new era of choice in the broadcast marketplace, making the consumers the ultimate winners."
